Published Date:
20 September 2016

On Saturday a secret and magical world of wildlife which lies just beyond every back door was opened up to local children. who were inspired to step into their own gardens and become enchanted.

It was a magical sessions with childrens natural curiosity being awakened by The Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler, actress Helen Baxendale and entertainer Deva Armstrong.

All three performers read from Zog and the Flying Doctors, a new picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Axel also treated everyone by drawing his most famous characters, the Gruffalo, Stickman, Snail and the Whale…and taught the children how to draw them too! While Deva lead a rousing sing-a-long of the Flying Doctors Song, and more.

Axel Scheffler, world famous children’s illustrator says, "I'm very much looking forward to our shows in September. It's a privilege to work with such a wonderful local organisation inspiring a love of our natural spaces and gardens, and creatures like hedgehogs that are threatened because of loss of habitat."

The Alligator’s Mouth, independent children’s bookshop in Richmond, were on hand selling Axel's books illustrated by Axel.
